charcoal-drawing
Black and White Charcoal Portrait Drawing of a Woman with Dark Hair - Signed

An original vintage charcoal portrait drawing of a woman by Oklahoma artist and commercial illustrator Donna Foreman Hopper, sourced directly from her estate in Norman, Oklahoma. This black-and-white portrait on textured paper features dark, swept-back hair, a steady gaze, and richly modeled facial features.

Strong contrasts of light and shadow give the sitter’s face a sculptural presence. Broad charcoal passages define the cheekbones, brow, and neck, while softer shading surrounds the head and dissolves toward the shoulders. The loosely indicated collar balances the carefully developed face, preserving the expressive quality of an original portrait study. A small artist’s signature appears beside the neckline.

Hopper majored in art at Oklahoma State University, where she studied under Doel Reed. Her professional career included work as a Hallmark illustrator, a fashion artist for TG&Y, and subsequent work with advertising agencies. Sourced from her estate, this drawing connects her commercial illustration background with her exploration of the human face.

The portrait’s monochrome palette and commanding expression make it a compelling focal point above a writing desk, on a library wall, or within a collected arrangement of drawings and paintings. A generous ivory mat and narrow antique gilt frame would complement a traditional interior; dark walnut or black framing would emphasize its graphic character.

An original charcoal drawing, not a reproduction.
