An original charcoal portrait drawing by Oklahoma artist and commercial illustrator Donna Foreman Hopper. A woman with short bangs looks to the side beneath a sheer, dark headscarf. Hopper contrasts the scarf’s loose, textured lines with carefully modeled features and a softly shaded background. The drawing bears an intertwined monogram near the lower left.
This piece as well as a number of others, was sourced from Hopper’s estate in Norman, Oklahoma. Hopper majored in art at Oklahoma State University, where she studied under Doel Reed, and later attended the Kansas City Art Institute. Her commercial art career included illustration for Hallmark, fashion advertising for TG&Y, and creative work for John A. Brown and The Oklahoma Publishing Company.
The portrait’s strong black-and-white composition would suit a study or dressing room. I’d frame it with a generous warm-white mat and a narrow dark wood frame, or use aged gilt to bring it into a more traditional gallery wall.
