An original vintage charcoal portrait drawing of a woman by Oklahoma artist and commercial illustrator Donna Foreman Hopper, sourced directly from her estate in Norman, Oklahoma. The sheet bears a handwritten date at the upper right that appears to read “Nov. 25, ’59.”
This mid-century female portrait features dark, swept waves, a prominent forehead curl, and a loosely outlined collared blouse. Strong contrasts of light and shadow sculpt the sitter’s cheekbones, eyes, and elongated neck, giving her composed expression a striking presence.
Dense charcoal passages in the hair contrast with softly blended facial shading and fluid lines at the neckline. The textured cream paper remains visible throughout, lending depth and warmth to the monochrome composition. A stylized artist’s monogram appears beside the collar, and an embossed paper manufacturer’s stamp is visible at the lower-left corner.
Hopper studied art at Oklahoma State University under Doel Reed. Her career included illustration for Hallmark, fashion advertising for TG&Y, and subsequent work for advertising agencies. Her attention to facial expression and silhouette is evident in this original portrait study.
An appealing addition to a collection of American drawings, vintage female portraits, or mid-century figurative art. Display it in an antiqued gilt frame above a writing desk, or pair it with complementary charcoal drawings for a collected gallery wall. A slim ebonized frame with an ivory mat would emphasize its dramatic tonal contrasts.
