An elegant vintage neoclassical giltwood and composition pier or mantel mirror, dating to the latter half of the 20th century.
Tall and architectural in form, the mirror features a dramatically stepped pediment centered by a classical urn or covered vessel resting upon scrolling supports. Symmetrically placed floral rosettes and leafy branches ornament the upper corners, with coordinating botanical motifs decorating the lower corners.
The frame is enriched with layers of classical molding, including beaded borders, repeating egg-and-dart or leaf-tip decoration, fluted side elements, and scrolling foliate details. Its warm, softly antiqued gold finish has developed subtle tonal variation that accentuates the molded ornament and gives the mirror considerable depth.
The mirror’s narrow vertical proportions make it particularly useful where a full-length decorative statement is desired without requiring an exceptionally wide wall. Designed in the tradition of late-18th-century French Louis XVI, English Adam and American Federal pier mirrors, it brings classical formality to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
A compelling focal point for an entry hall, living room, dining room, bedroom, dressing room, or fireplace mantel.
No maker’s label is presently visible. The quality and design recall mirrors produced by firms such as Harrison & Gil for the Dauphine Mirror Company; however, no manufacturer’s mark could be found.
Styling ideas:
Centered over a fireplace mantel with symmetrical brass candlesticks
Hung above a narrow console in an entry hall
Used as a dressing mirror in a traditional bedroom
Positioned between two windows or architectural openings
Paired with dark mahogany, burl wood, or lacquered furniture
Used as a formal counterpoint to contemporary upholstery and modern art
Styled with blue-and-white porcelain, antique books and silver objects
Hung against lacquered olive green, burgundy, chocolate brown or chalky plaster walls
Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The antiqued gilt finish exhibits scattered rubbing, surface marks, spotting, tonal variation and minor losses. The mirror plate presents well with light age-appropriate wear. The reverse retains its hardboard backing and hanging hardware. Professional installation is recommended due to the mirror’s size and weight.
Dimensions:
47.75" Tall
30" Wide
1.5" Deep
