This elegant Italianate giltwood frame houses a classical Madonna and Child print, inspired by Renaissance devotional imagery. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary tenderly gazing downward as the Christ Child rests beside her—an enduring and deeply symbolic subject drawn from Italian Old Master tradition. The print in particular looks to have been cut from a publication of some sort, perhaps a magazine.
The frame itself is the star: a deep, square-profile gilt surround with rich, time-softened gold leaf patina, centered by a circular opening fitted with a faux marble or alabaster-style liner that adds architectural contrast and visual depth. The combination of square exterior and round aperture is both sculptural and timeless, making this piece read as an object as much as artwork.
The reverse bears a Terra-style maker’s mark and copyright date (1994), indicating late-20th-century production of a decorative object designed to evoke early Italian religious frames. These pieces were often produced in limited runs and are now increasingly sought after for their old-world presence at an accessible scale.
This is a highly versatile frame that bridges religious art, classical European design, and grandmillennial interiors.
