A striking vintage lidded desk or keepsake box crafted from wood and entirely clad in hand-marbled paper, dating to approximately the 1960s or 1970s.
The paper features a traditional Peacock, Pavone or Bouquet pattern, created by combing floating pigments into rhythmic rows of featherlike scallops. Its beautifully neutral palette combines chocolate brown, taupe, caramel, cream and parchment, producing the visual richness of stone or tortoiseshell from a distance.
A long brass-toned piano hinge connects the fitted lid to the rectangular body. The spacious, unlined wooden interior makes the box useful for storing correspondence, photographs, stationery, jewelry, remote controls or other personal keepsakes.
Although its exact origin is unknown, the box follows the long Florentine tradition of covering wooden desk accessories with hand-decorated marbled paper. Display it on a library desk, cocktail table, console or dresser, either alone or stacked with art and design books. Its warm brown palette pairs especially well with burlwood, tortoiseshell, bamboo, brass, rattan and dark green upholstery.
Vintage condition with an intact wooden structure and a beautifully distressed original surface. The marbled paper exhibits scattered losses, lifting, abrasions, scratches, discoloration and wear, particularly along the corners, edges, front and side panels. These areas expose portions of the paper ground and underlying wood. The unlined wooden interior also shows age-related marks and wear.
