From a beautifully curated New Mexico estate, this striking hand-tooled tin cross embodies the deep spiritual and artisanal traditions of Mexican folk art. Meticulously embossed and shaped by hand, the piece features a vibrant red lacquered Sacred Heart—a centuries-old Catholic symbol representing divine love, compassion, and the enduring spirit of faith. The flaming heart motif, often associated with protection and devotion, is a hallmark of Mexican retablo and milagro craftsmanship, found in homes and chapels throughout Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende.

Each curve and punch mark was applied by hand, creating a subtle shimmer and depth unique to traditional tin artistry. The back retains its original “Made in Mexico” marking and a soldered loop for easy wall display.

Provenance & History

This piece was acquired from a private New Mexico estate known for its rich collection of devotional folk art and Santos. Mexican tinwork, or hojalata, flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries when local artisans repurposed imported tinplate to create religious icons, offering boxes, and crosses for altars. The tradition continues today—each work a testament to both craftsmanship and faith.
