Vintage European Tole Bird and Floral Wall Planter or Magazine Rack - circa 1960

A wonderfully whimsical mid-20th-century painted-metal wall planter or plant holder, likely Continental European and possibly Italian, dating to approximately the 1950s or 1960s.

The demi-lune frame is constructed from slender iron rods and sheet metal, then embellished with two dimensional, long-tailed exotic birds perched among twisting branches, serrated leaves, layered flowers and clusters of berries. Expressive scrolling ironwork forms an elegant crest above the planter.

Its richly aged palette combines verdigris and forest green with touches of turquoise, yellow, coral, burgundy and red. Decades of natural oxidation, fading and paint loss have created a beautifully timeworn surface that gives the piece the character of an old European garden ornament.

Designed to hang flat against a wall, the half-round basket can hold a separate liner or small potted plant. It is equally charming displayed empty as sculptural botanical wall art. For live plants, we recommend using a removable watertight container rather than planting directly into the metal frame. It would also be great to use as a magazine rack mounted on a wall. 

A distinctive addition to an English country-inspired conservatory, garden room, sunroom or covered veranda. Style it with trailing ivy, maidenhair fern or a small orchid, or hang it above a skirted console or bamboo table surrounded by framed botanical prints. It would also be striking filled with dried branches or high-quality faux greenery.

Good vintage condition with a substantial original patina. The painted surface exhibits oxidation, rust, fading, scratches and areas of paint loss throughout. Several of the delicate botanical elements show age-related bends and possible minor losses. No removable planter liner is included. These imperfections are consistent with age, outdoor or garden-room use, and contribute to the piece’s decorative character.
